Additional processes can be carried out to enable the part to seamlessly enter the customers' workflow or to meet stringent quality standards. These may include:
De-flashing
Compression moulded parts typically have excess material which is a by-product of the moulding technique and is called 'flash'. This can be removed cryognically or by hand. Cryogenic methods involve freezing the parts in special machines and then tumbling or 'bead-blashing' which results in the removal of the flash. Hand trimming involves highly skilled operatives pulling away the flash using "tear trims" (which have been designed into the tool), &/or trimming using very sharp knives.
Cutting
Parts can either be cut out of a sheet of rubber using die-cutting techniques and a clicker press or can be cut to size by hand or using a special cutting machine.
Buffing & Grinding
Some components requires the surface to be modified either by grinding away the surface layer or by buffing.
