Styrene Butadiene

Styrene butadiene rubber was first developed in the 1930's to stretch dwindling natural rubber resources due to the rise in popularity of cars (which needed tyres).

SBR is still used for some tyres in addition to belts and hoses for machinery and engines, gaskets, and break and clutch pads for vehicles.

Advantages: Good dynamic, mechanical and fatigue properties; high strength, resilience and abrasion properties.
Limitations: Suffers from poor oxidation, ozone, oil and solvent resistance. Temperature resistance is also poor.
